Filter Coffee

This is my favorite way to enjoy specialty coffee.

Filter coffee is also known by many as “pour-over coffee”. This method yields a delicious cup of coffee that highlights sweetness, acidity, and clarity of flavors.

I recommend using a 1:16 ratio of coffee to water to begin. For many, this means between 16 and 25 grams of coffee and 256 to 400 grams of water for a single person.

Water is the most important part of any coffee- it makes up 98% of a filter coffee! A couple of water tips:

  1. Use water that tastes good on its own- if it doesn’t, it won’t taste good in coffee either! If your tap water doesn’t taste great, try filtering it.

  2. According to the Specialty Coffee Association, water should be between 195 and 205F for brewing. If you don’t have a thermometer, allow the water to boil, then allow it to sit for 30 seconds before brewing.

An example recipe for lightly roasted coffee:

  • 16 grams of coffee to 256 grams of water

  • Heat water to 205

  • Pre-wet the filter

  • Dump in ground coffee

  • Wet grounds using 32 grams of water (ensuring all grounds are wet)

  • After 45 seconds, pour 100 more grams of water

  • After 45 seconds, pour the remaining 124 grams of water

  • Allow coffee to draw down, then enjoy!
